TOXICOLOGIST

$6177 - $8455 per month, salary commensurate w/ training and experience

 

Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. This position is in the Department of Health (DOH), Environmental Health Administration, and is assigned to the Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response (HEER) office. HEER is responsible for the development and implementation of the Hawaii Environmental Response Law, HRS 128D. The HEER Office is responsible for implementing, coordinating, and overseeing the DOH’s role as the State’s lead agency for responding to spills of petroleum and hazardous substances on land or in water.  This position, as part of the Hazard Evaluation staff, provides risk assessment expertise to all environmental  programs (for example, Drinking Water or Clean Air Branches) in the DOH Environmental Health Administration, and provides health advice to other state and county agencies. This position requires initiative, knowledge, resourcefulness and leadership in order to review, understand and interpret highly complex technical, scientific and health issues.

 

 

Minimum Qualification(s)

 

EDUCATION:  Possession of a Doctoral Degree in Toxicology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Physiology, or a closely related specialty.

 

EXPERIENCE:  An expert with a Doctorate must have three years of responsible, professional experience, of which at least two years must have been related to human health risk assessment activities. This position requires an expert with a doctorate because of the specialized technical responsibilities. The individual is expected to represent the State or the DOH as an expert witness in court and public hearings. The expert must have a multi-media (air, water, soil) range of knowledge or experience in scientific and health disciplines.
