Veterinary Medical Officer
Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC)
$7,198 to $10,247 per month or higher commensurate with training and experience
Exempt, non-civil service, full-time, temporary appointment. The primary purpose of this position is to develop, direct, implement, and evaluate the Department's veterinary public health program, which strivestoprotecthumanhealththroughtheidentification,studyandcontrolofanimalassociatedhuman pathogens. The position’s responsibilities encompass the following broad range of activities: epidemiology, statistical analysis, survey, sampling, investigation, ecology, health education, and the interpretation and analysis of laboratory data. The position has a distinct role of leadership in an interdisciplinary team and provides technical expertise to other staff on matters regarding public health science and disease investigation and control.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION: Possession of a doctor's degree in Veterinary Medicine and a master's degree in public health from an accredited college or university OR have completed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service program.
EXPERIENCE: Except for the substitutions provided for in this specification, applicants must have had progressively responsible work experience of the kind and quality described in the following paragraphs and in the amounts specified.
Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for this position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.
Veterinary Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional work experience in veterinary medicine of which two (2) shall have involved veterinary public health.
Substitutions allowed: Possession of a Ph.D. in public health other pertinent veterinary field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) years of the Veterinary Experience requirement.
LICENSE: Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii, or a valid temporary permit to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Hawaii, provided that a permanent license is obtained within the six months of hire.
Valid driver’s license preferred.
