Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,701 - $5,600/Mon.
DUTIES: Responsible for investigating the role of innate immunity in long COVID and HIV using human specimens and animal models. Determines underlying mechanisms associated with chronic conditions after infection and identifies potential therapeutic targets for chronic disease prevention. Assists in evaluating the therapeutic potential of targeting neutrophil activation in infectious-related comorbidities using in vitro and in vivo systems. Records, summarizes data and findings meticulously and thoroughly with strong attention to detail. Presents data in weekly laboratory meetings with other members. Meets regularly with the Principal Investigator (PI) as well as other collaborators to critically review progress and challenges of own and related work being conducted concurrently.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
PhD from an accredited college or university in Tropical Medicine, Virology, Cell and Molecular Biology, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience working in the field of virology, immunology or cell molecular biology. Includes experience with performing flow cytometry and data analysis as well as conducting animal work. Experience with statistical methods; in analysis and write-up of experimental data for oral and written presentations and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals; and extensive background in molecular and cell biology techniques. Experience in conducting RNA and protein extraction in rodents, and histological analysis.
KNOWLEDGE
Well-grounded knowledge of mammalian cell cultures.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to work independently. Ability to interact successfully with a broad range of individuals within the lab and the University. Ability to perform molecular and cell biology techniques, including cell/tissue culture, flow cytometry analysis, cell-based assays, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Western blotting and Luminex assays. Ability to use both personal computer and MAC systems, and relevant computer programs (e.g., GraphPad Prism). Ability to work with mice. Must not have obvious allergies to rodents or other allergens found in the laboratory animal environment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety program, which includes completing a health history questionnaire and obtaining medical clearance to work with animals in a vivarium. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in clinical immunology and translational research is highly desirable. Experience in bioinformatics is preferred but not required.
