PCSU COMMUNITY FORESTER – ID# 224793.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), O‘ahu Branch, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $5,082.56 - $5,286.53/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Coordinates and leads matters pertinent to Native Hawaiian Hardwoods for Traditional and Cultural Practices project. Develops  partnerships and community outreach and engagement. Liaises between State Forestry staff, non-profit partners, hardwood user groups, traditional carver(s), and community members. Using a biocultural approach, trains community members and leads volunteers in site preparation, collecting seeds, planting Native Hawaiian Hardwood seedlings, monitoring seedlings, and maintaining planting sites. Oversees, tracks, and reports on progress,  accomplishments, and financials on a semi-annual basis.  Develops presentations to existing and potential partners to promote knowledge of Native Hawaiian Hardwoods. Improves public understanding of the condition of our forests, scarcity of Native Hawaiian Hardwoods, and opportunities to enhance native forests and Native Hawaiian Hardwood populations.  Convenes and supports a community of Native Hawaiian Hardwoods users and stewards through supporting learning opportunities on traditional carving, collection, and forest stewardship. Co-hosts community carving workshops. Coordinates with nurseries (private and state) to grow the species needed for this project. Collects data and leads the evaluation of propagules and planting to assess survivorship and health of each species at each forest reserve location. Plans meetings and presents accomplishments to partners.  Collaborates with partners to further project’s initiatives and goals. Plans events to improve visibility for the program and to promote Native Hawaiian Hardwood awareness, planting, and care in State Forest Reserves. Evaluates changes in community members’ knowledge, perceptions, and connections to native forests and Native Hawaiian Hardwoods based on community feedback collected at cultural workshops and education/outreach events. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Botanical, Biological, Environmental Science, or related field. (Associate’s Degree and at least two (2) additional years of experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years working in natural resource project management. Experience must include at least two (2) years of project management,   conducting outreach and education and report writing. Specialization in biocultural and place-based approaches to stewardship and community engagement.  At least two (2) years practicing forest stewardship.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint. Awareness of common tree species (e.g., native, Polynesian-introduced, non-native, invasive) and Native Hawaiian Hardwood species in planting, and their occurrence in urban Hawai‘i forests; in addition to Hawaiʻi-specific varieties of  Native Hawaiian Hardwoods, knowledge of other  local trees used in cultural practices.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Excellent organizational, planning, leadership, and communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal), as well as strong problem-solving, decision-making, and process management skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs and Google equivalent. Ability to manage program budgets efficiently. Ability to initiate, plan, coordinate, and implement urban and community forestry outreach and education. Ability to coordinate volunteers. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must pass a chainsaw safety class within six (6) months of hire. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months of hire).

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike up to five (5) miles to plant and maintain trees in forest reserves  and community forests.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Experience working with underserved and at-risk populations. Experience working with institutions such as State and Federal Agencies. Experience in grounding programs in equity, justice, diversity and inclusion. Experience leading biocultural community outreach and engagement projects in Hawaiʻi. Specialized experience in working with non-profit and civic organizations involved in urban and community forestry. Experience with hands-on traditional arts with forest products. Working knowledge of community agroforestry systems. Experience in event planning.
