(2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with thePacificCooperativeStudiesUnit(PCSU),Ko‘olauMountainsWatershedPartnership (KMWP),locatedinPearlCity,Hawai‘i.Continuationofemploymentisdependentupon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,400/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Assists the Ko‘olau Mountains Watershed Partnership (KMWP) and its partners in conducting fieldwork to implement the KMWP Management Plan and address landscape-level watershed threats.  Work will focus on the protection of the native Hawaiian forest and related water resources within the approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) acres of forested watershed in the Ko‘olau Mountains.  Assists with efforts to complete field and other watershed conservation activities, such as native ecosystem and watershed monitoring, feral animal control, fence line building and maintenance, native plant restoration, and mechanical/chemical alien plant control. Drives project vehicles to work sites. Rides in helicopters to access field sites. Records detailed field data and spatial information, and inputs data into Global Positioning System (GPS) and computer systems.  Maintains field equipment and assists with public relations activities. This is a progression job beginning with an entry level (Level I). It will assume the employee to start at Level I (unless justified and qualified to start at a higher level). Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be promoted to a higher level. Availability and ability to perform duties independently is expected to increase with each level of progression. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

HighSchoolDiplomaorG.E.D.equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Up to one (0-1) year of work experience with biological resources, conservation, or natural resource management in Hawai‘i.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history. Familiarity with invasive species and Hawai‘i. Knowledge of herbicide use and field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and common introduced weed species.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to use GPS unit, altimeter, compass, maps, and power tools (e.g., chainsaws, weed whackers, etc.). Ability to use word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Ability to identify common native Hawaiian and alien plants. Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within three (3) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months of from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for  up tofour(4)consecutivedays.Abilitytobackpack,liftand carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Fieldwork with emphasis on natural resource management, alien plant control, or watershed management with a land management agency. Experience conducting biological surveys within the Ko‘olau in Hawai’i. Previous experience monitoring and mapping vegetation and stream resources. Previous fence building or construction experience. Familiarity with computers, data entry, Geographic Information System (GIS), and use of GPS units. Experience working in and around helicopters and using herbicides to control weedy vegetation. Rappelling experience. College courses or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences.
