HAL FIELD CREW & DATA MANAGEMENT LEADER (OAHU) – ID# 225120.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai‘i Ant Lab (HAL), located on Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,376/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Contributes to the development and ongoing refinement of the Oahu invasive ant management strategy. Schedules and implements little fire ant surveys and control efforts on Oahu, and responds quickly to reports and discoveries of new infested sites as they are detected. Drives to various work sites. Collects, summarizes, and stores data according to HAL procedures. Analyzes results and compiles these into reports, action plans, or management plans. Oversees  field crew staff with minimal supervision and ensures that appropriate safety and operation policies/guidelines are adhered to. Assists with invasive ant surveillance at ports of entry. Ensures samples are processed, data is entered,  maps are created, and summary reports are drafted following HAL standard procedures. Drives project vehicles to access field sites. Responsible for maintaining inventory logs and communicating project needs to the Program Manager. Compiles statistics on project field operations and drafts quarterly reports. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Entomology, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of experience in field work/data collection related to pest management, conservation, or natural resource management.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of invertebrate taxonomy and use of dichotomous keys. Some knowledge of pest management concepts and pesticide use and safety. Working knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet applications, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping programs, and imagery.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Strong organizational skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a small team and foster teamwork with a wide range of people. Ability to learn to recognize and

correctly identify ant species present in Hawai‘i using a microscope. Ability to use GPS units to record ant survey data and produce maps. Ability to take detailed field notes to guide little fire ant (LFA) management decisions. Ability to lead field staff and to organize field projects and data collection. Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to conduct fieldwork in remote locations under adverse conditions for prolonged periods. Some fieldwork may require traversing hazardous areas including steep and rocky topography and thick vegetation. Must be able to carry up to fifty (50) pounds of equipment (e.g., gas blower, backpack sprayer, etc.) on a routine basis, unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Prior supervisory experience leading paid staff. Category 9 or 10 restricted use pesticides applicators permit. Experience drafting invasive species management plans.
