CIMAR PIFSC FISHERIES RESEARCH COORDINATOR – ID# 224660.​

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $4,800 - $5,400/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Assists with coordinating specific aspects of Fish Life History research, including biological sampling, data collection, processing and ageing otoliths, reproductive assessments, and data analysis. Specifically works with the Fisheries Management and Research Division (FRMD) to support life history for both target and non-target species, with a focus on reef fish species, across the Pacific Islands region. Leads or co-leads the planning and implementation of research activities to meet project objectives. Leads the processing, analysis, and summarization of multi-disciplinary data. Participates in biological sampling which may include ship-based and small-boat based sampling. Assists with the preparation of scientific manuscripts or technical reports for publication and presentation. Prepares and delivers presentations and papers to partnering agencies, universities, and at fisher engagement events. Travels to workshops, training events, conferences, and meetings to gather information and to present and train interested parties or partners. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

 

EDUCATION

Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Marine Biology, Zoology, Biology, Fisheries, Oceanography, or related field involving studies of marine science or fisheries.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience with marine research projects, which included data analysis, report writing, and data analysis using R. Experience includes biological sampling experience (otolith and gonad extractions) and fish data collection.

KNOWLEDGE

Working knowledge of the following areas: fish biology, ichthyology, fish age and growth, fish reproduction, programming in R. Knowledge and understanding of principles and practices in the fields of fish biology, and fisheries management. Knowledge of statistical procedures to perform data analyses, including interpretation of results pertaining to fish life history. Knowledge of fish biology.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be able to meet and maintain the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to write scientific manuscripts and technical reports, and to make presentations that are suitable for a range of audiences. Ability to work and make decisions independently and to meet programmatic requirements within schedule and budgetary constraints. Ability to independently plan, implement, and manage projects. Ability to lead and train research assistants in field and data handling procedures. Ability to coordinate with agencies concerned with research, management, and protection of coral reef ecosystems and build strong collaborative working relationships with potential partners in local management, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and research communities. Ability to use statistical, analytical, and presentation software. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools, including word processors, spreadsheets, and MS PowerPoint. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet and maintain U.S. Department of Commerce (USDOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment.  Must be able to complete the NOAA Laboratory Safety training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

 

Familiarity with local fishing communities and knowledge of fish ecology, and/or fisheries science in Hawai’i and the Pacific Island Region. Preferred experience in otolith processing and ageing and histological gonad assessments.
