Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Head of Food and Beverage and the Lead Barista, the barista provides prompt and friendly customer service, creates quality coffee drinks and other beverages, serves premade food, and maintains a sanitary and comfortable environment for Museum patrons at the Honolulu Museum of Art Coffee Bar.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year or more of prior experience in hospitality and a desire to learn more about coffee.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to be flexible and solve unexpected problems as they arise.
  • Ability to take direction from the Lead Barista and manager, and to work independently or cooperatively with other staff.
  • Organized and detail oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and work calmly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Must be able to obtain DOH Food Hander Card and server Liquor Card.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.
  •  Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 1.5 to 2 years of prior experience as a server or barista in a café or restaurant preferred, but will train the right candidate
  • Organized and detail oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and work calmly and efficiently under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of coffee equipment and tools, including the use of espresso machines.
  • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art’s established identity and dedication to advancing it.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs the day-to-day operations of the Coffee Bar.
  • Prepares coffee, pastries, and other drinks, and ensures that food and drink quality are consistent and meet the standards of the Honolulu Museum of Art.
  • Cleans and maintains Coffee Bar and surrounding dining area.
  • Maintains appropriate stock levels and beverage preparation items.
  • Maintains a poised appearance during periods of high volume.
  • Discovers and responds to customer needs.
  • Models a ‘customer comes first’ attitude and delivers excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through respectful communication and cooperation with others at all times, continuous training and modeling inclusive behaviors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

The Honolulu Museum of Art is committed to practicing salary transparency. The salary for this position is $15.45 per hour plus tips. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity. For PT employees, our benefits include:

  • 20 hours of sick leave accrued per year, with a maximum bank of 55 hours
  • Shop, Museum Café, and Art School discounts
  • Onsite parking provided

Working Conditions and Atmosphere:

The Barista works with minimum supervision. Due to the nature of the responsibilities, evening and weekend work is sometimes required, and at times may be on an emergency basis. Noise level is sometimes louder than normal due to multiple conversations. The Coffee Bar is a relatively small, compact space located in one of the Museum’s courtyards. Due to the Coffee Bar being located outdoors, temperatures within the coffee bar can fluctuate with the weather.

Coffee Bar hours for baristas are:

  • Wed, Thurs, Sat, Sun: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Baristas generally work 3 to 4 shifts per week, with shifts lasting approximately 5 to 7 hours. Regularly scheduled hours will be 19 or less per week. Additional hours may be required for working special events. The employee must be able to fulfil all Essential Duties with or without a reasonable accommodation.
